Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is a procedure that use powerful lasers that penetrate deep into the skin and are able to permanently remove the ink particles within the cells that give the color to the tattoo. There are different types of lasers(Q-switch laser and pico laser) work on removing tattoos, depending on the color of the ink of the tattoo.

The procedure for the tattoo removal will depend on what is the type and color of your tattoos. Most people need several sessions to remove the tattoo, the interval for each session is around 45 days. Although the exact number of sessions cannot be predicted in advance but usually 5-10 sessions are required. The variability depends on many factors, such as the size, color, location and age of the tattoo.

Q-switch laser tattoo removal

Q-Switched laser machine is a unique type of lasers that delivers energy in very short bursts. This unique property makes it an ideal laser treatment for pigment-related conditions such as freckles, sunspots, birthmarks or tattoos. The ultra-short bursts of energy delivered by the laser disrupt the pigment-containing cells within the skin, leading to fading and clearing of the treated area.

Pico laser tattoo removal

Pico laser also named “picosecond laser” is a type of laser technology for tattoo removal and pigmentation removal. Pico technology is regarded as one of the most advanced laser treatments currently available on the market.

Pico laser technology is a non-surgical, non-invasive laser skin treatment that can be used to address the majority of common skin imperfections, including spots caused by sun damage and acne scarring.

To remove unwanted tattoo inks, we have 2 types of technology:

Q-switch laser machine: Q-switch ND YAG Laser machine use 1064nm or 532nm wavelength to work on the tattoos, the pulse width is only several nanoseconds.

Pico laser machine: Pico laser machine is the upgrading technology based on the Q-switch lasers, the pulse width is only several picoseconds. The results of pico laser are much more effective and less painful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laser tattoo removal is done by a pico laser machine or Q-switched ND YAG laser machines. This technology could remove the tattoos effectively and safely. The science of tattoo removal has improved so much over the last 18 months. Most tattoos can now be completely removed with your skin looking just like your skin looked before. The Laser heats the tattoo ink, sometimes to nearly 300 degrees Celsius to break it apart. Differing laser wavelengths are often required to take on multiple colors of ink. 1064nm is for black and blue tattoo inks while 532nm is for red and brown inks.

Lasers work to remove tattoos by breaking up the larger ink particles into pieces small enough for white blood cells to absorb them. To break up an ink particle, you need to heat it to make it expand due to thermal expansion, but the zap has to be quick enough so that half of the particle remains cool. The opposing cool and hot forces then separate the ink particles into smaller pieces.

Once the lasers break the ink particles apart into small enough pieces, the white blood cells can absorb them for transportation to the liver and elimination.

Laser tattoo removal has been the most popular method as it is effective and safe. However, can laser 100% remove the tattoos? The answer is yes. The majority of tattoo removals will result in a complete removal, however not all tattoos are made equal, and there are a variety of factors that can affect the tattoo removal process. The success of the removal is dependent on the size, depth, position, and color of the tattoo itself, as well as your skin type.

The result of the tattoo removal is also affected by the health of your body’s immune system and whether or not you’re following an aftercare regime designed to help your skin heal. When you get a tattoo the body’s macrophages engulf the foreign ink pigment, holding on to it and thus keeping your tattoo in place. When considering different tattoo removal procedures, using a laser is the quickest and safest option for your skin.

The level of pain you’ll experience also depends on the location of your tattoo, your threshold for pain, and the kind of laser removal treatment used. The size of the tattoo you wish to remove also should be considered as it will decide the number of sessions you would require. There are several treatment options available including laser treatment, surgical removal, and dermabrasion.

Older and amateur tattoos are easier to remove as the skin has completely healed, while the ones located on the extremities are difficult to treat since the circulation is relatively poor. Black pigment absorbs all wavelengths and hence, tattoos with black ink are the easiest to remove, while green, yellow, and fluorescent inks are notoriously difficult to remove. There are different laser options to remove certain pigmented tattoos. The Q-switch is the most common type of laser used to remove tattoos with purple and violet pigment.

Laser tattoo removal is proven to be effective and safe but in most situations, we need more than 1 session to remove the tattoo.  Generally speaking, it takes around 10-12 sessions to see complete removal results. However, many factors play into the overall outcome of each client’s tattoo. Typically, you will start to see tattoo fading around sessions 3-5 which is optimal for people who are seeking removal for a cover-up, but it will likely take 10-12 sessions to see complete removal results. Just like any other procedure, results will vary depending on you.

Everyone is different and will have various outcomes on their tattoo removal based on the factors listed, but in general, we have seen that most tattoos can be removed around 10-12 sessions spaced every 6-8 weeks apart. Learn more about how long it takes to remove a tattoo in this article.

The decision to have a tattoo removed is extremely personal. Only you can decide if the benefits of tattoo removal will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications of tattoo removal are acceptable. Your plastic surgeon and/or staff will explain in detail the risks associated with tattoo removal. You will be asked to sign consent forms to ensure that you fully understand the procedures you will undergo and any risks or potential complications.

The potential risks of tattoo removal include, but are not limited to:

  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Possible need for further surgery
  • Skin discoloration that may be permanent
  • Suboptimal aesthetic result
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Ink color change
  • Pigmentation change
  • Eye injury
  • Hair removal
  • Blisters

These risks and others will be fully discussed with you before you consent to perform the procedure. You must address all your questions directly with your plastic surgeon.

Most customers’ skin will heal back to its normal state. By using advanced pico laser technology and highly skilled providers, you can rest assured that there will be no scarring caused by our laser.  Typically, a professional operator will recommend scheduling a minimum of 6-8 weeks between the sessions to allow the skin enough time to heal. Stacking the treatments too close can cause damage and permanent side effects to the skin.

If you have scars from getting the tattoo in the first place, the pre-existing scars will likely remain. During a consultation, our provider will examine the tattoo and let the patient know what to expect in terms of scarring from the initial tattoo appointment. If your tattoo is not raised, it is more likely that your skin will heal after your appointment.

There are different answers to the question “old or new tattoo, which is easy to remove.” Some people says new tattoo is easy to remove because the ink in newer tattoos is closer to the surface of the skin and has not had as much time to spread and become embedded in the deeper layers of the skin. Additionally, newer tattoos tend to have less ink in them than older tattoos, which also makes them easier to remove. Some people believe old tattoo is easy to remove and it is because your tattoo will start to fade throughout the years due to direct exposure to the sun. For those who have an older tattoo, the laser process will be more straightforward because the sun exposure and the body fighting against it will help reduce the amount of ink that needs to be removed.

However, it’s also important to note that factors such as the size, location, and color of the tattoo, as well as the individual’s skin type, can also affect the ease of removal. It’s best to consult with a professional tattoo removal specialist to determine the best course of action for your specific tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal is a popular treatment in the market for that person who want to reduce their unwanted tattoos. The treatment is done by using the technology called picosecond laser machine and Q-switched ND YAG laser machine. The laser treatment heads with light beams of the laser could deliver power to the skin and break up the ink particles in the tattoo, which are then absorbed and eliminated by the body’s immune system.
